Our First Ambitions

The first day of the year feels like any other weekend morning, except on a Thursday. Mason and I get up twenty minutes apart and each go running separately before the sun comes up. We take turns showering and using the stove to cook breakfast. Each time our paths cross we exchange kisses, hugs, and those awesome jokes about having not done this or that all year.

By 8:30 we’ve made it through our morning routines at a lazy, nowhere to be speed. He adds in writing an email and I spend longer than usual with a couple new books. We layer up and make our way to the still empty street. Continue reading →

Last night I had a series of dreams that woke me up at six o’clock this morning, drenched in sweat and clutching my chest. Deep breath. Deep breath. Okay, you’re okay. I splash cold water on my face and curl back into bed with Mason.

The omnipresent list of things I need to get done today starts its march through my head, but I stop it. I remind myself that it’s a holiday. I did all the cooking yesterday, Mason’s gifts are wrapped and under the bookshelf. Today there is nothing pressing. Today is just for breathing, for loving, for peace. Continue reading →

How to build a family

My father knows how to hold a silence—just like his brother did—with tenderness and purpose. I come from a long line of gentlemen whose brains are always churning. Careful with each word they choose. They all share the same quiet, but ever-present engagement and a slow southern saunter. Their toes turn out and their chests lift up.

My mother overflows with excitement easy. An enthusiasm she shares with her sisters. All the women in my family are passionate in everything they do and quick to a plethora of emotions. We laugh easy, hurt with deep intensity, and understand the importance of hugs. Both how to give them well and with what frequency.
